January Read Aloud Giveaway

January Read Aloud Giveaway

JANUARY GIVEAWAY

READ ALOUD TO YOUR CHILD
When the Commission on Reading came out with the report Becoming a Nation of Readers in 1985 it stated that the “single most important activity for building knowledge for their eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children”.

The NAEYC and the IRA organizations wrote a joint position statement in 1998 which said “The single most important activity for building these understanding and skills essential for reading success appears to be reading aloud to children.”

Research shows that the number of different words a baby hears each day is the single most important predictor of later intelligence, school success and social competence. So how do you know what exactly should you read when?

–What do you buy after you’ve bought Goodnight Moon?
–Why should you read to a baby who can’t even sit for 5 minutes?
–How are you going to read to a baby who just began to walk–and won’t stop trying to get around the house?
–How often should you read to your baby to make sure she’s ready to sit in preschool?

The book Reading with Babies, Toddlers and Twos, by Susan Straub and KJ Dell’Antonia  is a fantastic guide to choosing, reading and loving books together.

This book is a great, friendly introduction to how and why to read aloud to your child and why you should start as young as possible. More importantly, it includes many lists of books by themes for children in the 0 to 3 age range. The lists are what make this book so useful as most booklist books are written for elementary school range, with a few selections for kindergardeners and preschoolers.

(The exception to that is Kathleen Odean’s Great Books for Babies and Toddlers: More Than 500 Recommended Books for Your Child’s First Three Years.)

Another classic book that is a faster, lighter read is Jim Trelease’s book   The Read- Aloud Handbook.

To win the book Reading with Babies, Toddlers and Twos you need to:
